Time is running out for African countries to meet Sustainable Development Goal 7 on energy access. The African Development Bank’s strategy to 2033 offers a critical opportunity to close the widening energy poverty gap in the continent and ensure a socially just energy transition.

Despite significant global progress on electricity access, in Sub-Saharan Africa, electricity poverty rose sharply over the past decade. Over 80 per cent of the region’s population were electricity poor in 2022 (SDG 7 Tracker Report, 2024). Progress is particularly challenging in rural areas, where the number of electricity poor people rose from 376 to 473 million.
